This is part of my VCU Drawing Unplugged nude model series. The day that our male model came in, we did many quicker sketches rather than just a few long, developed drawings. This drawing had a time limit of about 30 minutes. The most important aspects that I wanted to capture while drawing this were his posture while sitting and the form of his feet.

Graphite and white colored pencil
Artist's Statement:
This is my rough draft for the graphite/white colored pencil still life project we were assigned. This was my first time working with the two mediums, while the Canvas Chair was my final project for this unit. Since it was only a rough draft, I did it on rough paper. The contrasts I made with the two were very visible, and I liked the angle that I was at while drawing.

I was commissioned and paid to do the artwork for this book by the author, Barry Scott Will, who is also my father. While I had only done the cover for his previous book as a middle schooler, I also did artwork for the inside of the book for this. We had to go back and forth on the designs of some characters, specifically his idea of a dragon. For the clothes on the two people featured in the inside artwork, I examined both medieval clothes for the fantasy aspect of the book and modern clothes for the science fiction aspect of the book. The most aesthetically pleasing part to me is still the front cover, which is supposed to be the clan symbol of the trolls. As far as a paying job goes, it was interesting and fun to work on.

Note: This is the sequel to A Fine Basket of Fish; Ashton illustrated its front cover, as well.

Graphite, white pencil
Artist's Statement:
We were asked to do a still life using both graphite and white colored pencil in my art class at school, so I chose to draw a chair set up in the room. It was difficult to use Prismacolor and graphite in tandem, but I liked the contrast of the black and white, especially as how they were drawn out on the brown drawing paper. I used that to really try and capture the different edges of where the chair was poking out from under the canvas draped over it. This is 1 of a set of 2 artworks with this theme.

I had fun making this piece because it was both observational and creative. We were asked to look at a piece of popcorn and draw a piece inspired by the popcorn we looked at. When looking into my piece, I saw a chubby, cute dog, and that is what I drew. I added in an area of black at the dog’s head to split up the paper and add some depth.
