Will I have an attack today? Talk about the $10,000 question! This is an article about my attempt to predict my upcoming health.

What is an attack?

For me, it is usually one or more of the following:

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Diarrhea (very sudden, unprocessed)
  • Flushing & extreme itching
  • Migraine
  • Pre-syncope or syncope
  • Tachycardia (for me, calculated at over 150 BPM; over 100 BPM is far too common)

For me, the equation is more like this.

Assumptions:

  • I am healthy (not experiencing a virus or bacterial infection)
  • I have taken all of my medications

"Will I have an attack" Equation

(histamine 🐝levels ➕ recent sleep 💤 quality ➕
hydration 💧 levels ➕ temperature🌡️ where my body is ➕ recent exertion 🏃🏼‍♀️ ➕ recent level of vibration 🚜 ➕ altitude⛰️➕ barometric pressure)
✖️(Stress 🤯 level)
✖️(Anxiety 😰 level)
➕(§, or my variable for "unknown trigger")

So, do I never try new experiences? No way. It would be too distressing, to depressing. I am my own boss, so I can modify my workload as needed to accommodate. Also, our family is accustomed to how one needs to vacation when one has the medical issues we have.

So, do I never try new foods? Are you kidding, I'm a foodie!
When I know my equation is high, I go back to a very simplistic diet. Sometimes that is for a meal, sometimes a day, sometimes a week or month.

Attacks are not my only form of health issue. I also experience pain--literally, as I type this, I am experiencing hypermobility pain related to my rib. But general ongoing pain has been so normal for me, I don't factor it in the same way. Attacks require me to change my behavior in some way; pain is just something I'm accustomed to pushing through.

When it all comes down to it, I am not fully able to predict my health--hence, that unknown trigger. But just knowing the complex set of causes helps me rationalize my health experience.

And that, for me, is my first step toward acceptance.
